This year’s colour of the year is PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri.

About Pantone Colour of the Year

Pantone created a standardised colour system back in the 1960s, enabling designers around the world to talk about colour in the same language.

Each year Pantone looks at global trends and influences to select a single colour which they feel will epitomise the year to come.

Very Peri

We love the positive feel of this year’s purple tone – Very Peri.

As Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute, puts it:

As we move into a world of unprecedented change, the selection of PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri brings a novel perspective and vision of the trusted and beloved blue colour family, encompassing the qualities of the blues, yet at the same time with its violet red undertone, PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expressions.

Will lots of brands suddenly switch to purple?

Purple is an interesting option for a brand identity. It’s a close relative of blue, which is the most popular choice for a brand colour, but it’s most definitely not blue.

Purple is said to be associated with luxury, quality and authenticity.

Cadbury
Cadbury is possibly the best know purple brand, using the colour to symbolise the luxurious feel of its chocolate.

It’s also a popular colour with some tech brands, think Yahoo and Twitch for example.

Yahoo!

It’ll be interesting to see how much this decision influences marketing, or the wider world, over the coming year.
